Tim Somerville

Tim is the founding Partner of the Firm with more than 45 years’ experience. Tim is involved in the Business law and General law practices of the Firm and also has considerable experience in advising on tax aspects of business.
Experience
Tim’s clients operate in a wide range of business environments. He specialises in structuring businesses to minimise tax and optimise asset protection and succession planning. Tim also draws on his background in litigation to represent clients involved in commercial litigation.
Tim has been awarded specialist accreditation in business law by the Law Society of NSW, and invited to sit on the Law Society committee which awards specialist accreditation in business law, a recognition of his experience and skill in handling complex business transactions, including their tax aspects.
Some recent examples of matters he has handled include:
- Enforcing the rights of a minority shareholder who was being bullied by the majority.
- Advising on the regulatory and taxation issues of a foreign take-over of an Australian business, with a network of companies in Australia and overseas
- Negotiating a joint venture between a software company and a major retailer, to develop and market jointly a retail software product
Professional recognition
- Author of the LexisNexis online publication on buying and selling businesses.
- President of the North Metropolitan Law Society for 4 years
- Regular speaker at legal seminars, including the annual NexisLexis series on estate planning.
- Member of the Law Society committee for awarding accreditation in business law for 4 years.
Outside Interests
- Family – Married with 4 sons and 8 beautiful grandchildren.
- Languages – He has always had a passion for studying foreign languages. After studying Latin, ancient Greek and French at school, and ancient Greek at University, he has become fluent in Indonesian and French, and is working on improving his Italian.
- Tennis – Keen competition player
- Skiing – both in Australia and overseas
- Writing – Tim’s novel “The Rupiah Tree” is based on his experience working in the Indonesian legal system in the 1980s and 90s.
